Remembering Michael “Mike” Frogel, MD (1950-2024)

Dr Mike FrogelDr. Frogel (z”l) served on APF’s Board for 20 years, and as our president in 2014 and 2015. As Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Dept. Chair, his major areas of interest were pediatric emergency preparedness, disaster-related mental health, child advocacy, sports medicine, weight management, and preventive pediatrics.

Dr. Frogel was a recognized expert and researcher on the use of palivizumab to prevent lower respiratory tract infections due to RSV in high-risk infants and children. He also conducted work on stem cell research for the treatment of vascular diseases and diabetes.

Dr. Frogel was a founding member of both the New York City Pediatric Disaster Coalition (NYCPDC) and National Pediatric Disaster Coalition (NPDC). He honorably served the NYCPDC as a Co-Principal Investigator since the coalition’s inception in 2008, and as the first Chairman of the NPDC from its establishment in 2015 until his recent death. Dr. Frogel participated as a subject matter expert on a wide range of local and national committees and panels, including the Institute of Medicine’s National Advisory Committee on Children in Disasters, GNYHA Hospital Bomb Blast Task Force, NY State Ventilator Allocation Task Force, Pediatric Hospital Preparedness Task Force, and others.

As an internationally recognized expert on pediatric emergency preparedness, he frequently lectured on that topic in the United States and abroad. Dr. Frogel coordinated an annual comprehensive course in Israel for physicians worldwide on Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Mental Health. At his urging and with his leadership, the Israeli Ministry of Health and Home Front Command have conducted major full-scale pediatric-specific hospital drills.

The Dr. Michael Frogel Memorial Education Fund will maintain and grow Israel’s reservoir of medical and operational knowledge by offering grants for Israeli physicians to come to prestigious North American medical centers to further their training in medical and surgical subspecialties.

We invite you to consider making a contribution today in honor of Dr. Frogel’s remarkable commitment to improving healthcare in Israel and for children everywhere.

Thank you for your kindness, and for keeping Mike, his family and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers.

With much gratitude,
Richard G. Schmidt, MD
