President's Message

A word from our President, Dr. Richard G. Schmidt

Together we stand in solidarity, and together we make a difference in Israel.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As we approach the High Holidays, we are called to reflect on the year behind us, consider the work still before us and renew our commitment to one another.

This season holds special meaning for me. Serving as APF’s first non-Jewish president is one of the great honors of my life. Although I was not raised Jewish, my wife and our children have welcomed me into the rhythms of Jewish life and given me a deep appreciation for its traditions, values and enduring connection to Israel. Through them, I have come to understand that Israel is not a distant cause. It is woven into our family’s identity, hopes and future, and I know that’s also true for many of you.

That personal connection has made APF’s mission especially meaningful to me.

At the heart of our work is a value that transcends background or belief: Every life is precious. APF puts that principle into action by strengthening Israel’s healthcare system, preparing medical professionals to respond in times of crisis and investing in the physicians and nurses who will shape the future of medicine in Israel.

Since the attacks of October 7, 2023, APF has trained and prepared more than 250 healthcare volunteers to provide critical medical and psychological support in hospitals and communities throughout Israel. But these extraordinary professionals have brought more than clinical expertise. They have brought comfort, solidarity and the reassurance that Israel’s healthcare community does not stand alone.

Your support enables APF to maintain this vital network of physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals who are ready to answer Israel’s call in times of need.

Our responsibility also extends far beyond moments of emergency. Since 1951, APF has sponsored more than 1,500 Israeli physicians through advanced Fellowships at leading medical institutions across the United States and Canada. After completing their training, these Fellows return home with specialized knowledge, innovative techniques and professional relationships that benefit patients throughout Israel.

Many go on to lead hospital departments, establish new clinical programs, expand care in underserved communities and train the next generation of Israeli healthcare professionals. Thanks to that ripple effect, a single Fellow can impact thousands of patients over the course of their career.

APF also advances emergency preparedness, supports nursing education and helps Israeli medical professionals participate in international scientific exchanges. Together, these efforts strengthen Israel’s ability to meet today’s challenges while building a healthier and more resilient future.

The High Holidays remind us that reflection is only hypothetical unless it leads to action. This year, I ask you to renew your support of APF and, if possible, to increase your commitment. Your gift will help prepare volunteers, educate Fellows and ensure that Israel’s healers have the training and resources they need to save lives.

My connection to the Jewish people and to Israel began with family. Through APF, that circle of family has grown to include remarkable healthcare professionals, volunteers, supporters and friends across North America and Israel. I am profoundly grateful to stand among you.

May the New Year bring healing to those who are suffering, strength to those who care for them and lasting peace and security to Israel and all its people.

On behalf of everyone at APF, thank you for your generosity, your partnership and your unwavering commitment to Israel’s medical community.

“May the year and its curses end; may the new year and its blessings begin.”

Richard G. Schmidt, MD
