Dr. Sherwood L. Gorbach graduated Tufts University School of Medicine in 1962. After internship and residency in internal medicine at Cornell-Bellevue Medical Center, he returned to the Tufts-New England Medical Center for a fellowship in infectious diseases. He received additional postgraduate training in parasitology and entomology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and in gastroenterology at the Hammersmith Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. He has conducted studies of microflora, enteric infections and nutrition in USA, England, India and Latin America. From 1969 to 2014, Dr. Gorbach was continuously funded as a principal investigator by the National Institutes of Health for research in gastrointestinal infections, HIV and nutrition. He has worked with probiotics since 1978 and developed in 1985 Lactobacillus GG which is used in commercial dairy products in over 40 countries. Dr. Gorbach has published 600 papers and has authored nineteen books. He has trained over 90 fellows in infectious diseases. He has received the Alexander Fleming Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (2007) and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Anaerobe Society of the Americas (2008). Since 2000, he has served as the editor-in-chief of CLINICAL INFECTIOUS DISEASES. At Tufts Medical School, he holds Distinguished Professorships (Emeritus) in the Departments of Public Health, Medicine, and Molecular Biology and Microbiology. He served (2005-2013) as Chief Scientific Officer at Optimer Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and during 2013 as Senior Vice President for Scientific Affairs at Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc. His association with American Healthcare Professionals & Friends For Medicine In Israel (APF) extends for more than 25 years, including two terms as President. Since September 2014, he works as an independent consultant to the pharmaceutical industry and continues teaching at Tufts Medical School.
