Wolfson Orthopaedics
San Francisco, CA
Dr. Nikolaj Wolfson is recognized around the world for his many contributions to the field of orthopedic surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery with proven expertise in the replacement of the hip, knee, and shoulder joints, hip joint resurfacing, hip, knee, and ankle arthroscopy, and other reconstructive joint procedures. At his private practice in San Francisco, Dr. Wolfson puts his patients first and develops highly effective and customized treatment plans. A pioneer in his field, Dr. Wolfson was one of the first surgeons to implement a Direct Anterior approach for hip replacement surgery. He learned the Ilizarov Technique under the tutelage of Professor G.A. Ilizarov, and he is one of an elite few in North America who practice this groundbreaking procedure for limb lengthening and reconstruction. Dr. Wolfson was also one of the first surgeons in San Francisco to use ConforMIS, knee implants that are designed specifically to perfectly fit each patient’s unique anatomy—both the femur and tibia. Dr. Wolfson received his medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel, and after completing his residency at the University of Western Ontario he undertook a fellowship in Adult Joint Replacement and Orthopaedic Trauma at the University of Toronto. He has also served as Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. A prolific author, Dr. Wolfson has published numerous abstracts, presented at conferences worldwide, and written several books. His most recent is the 2016 book entitled Orthopedics in Disasters, published by Springer. Dr. Wolfson continually volunteers his time and expertise to natural disaster missions around the world. When a massive earthquake struck Haiti in 2010 and Nepal in 2015, he traveled to these devastated areas with groups of other dedicated surgeons, working tirelessly to treat those who were critically injured. He is also leading a disaster Orthopedic Initiative with the world’s largest international orthopedic organization, SICOT, where he serves on the board of directors.
